Em 1947, Maurice Wilks, chefe de design da Rover, rabisca o conceito de um 4×4 versátil na areia da praia de Newborough, Anglesey, inspirado em um Jeep pós-guerra. Com seu irmão Spencer, diretor da Rover, desenvolvem o protótipo “Centre Steer” usando chassi Jeep. Em 30 de abril de 1948, o primeiro Land Rover Série I estreia no Amsterdam Motor Show: motor 1.6L 50 cv, tração 4×4 permanente, chassi de aço separado e design utilitário em alumínio verde. Produzido em Solihull, vende 8 mil unidades no primeiro ano, revolucionando o off-road britânico.
1958: Série II chega com corpo mais largo, motor 2.25L a gasolina (72 cv) e opção diesel (62 cv), vendendo 200 mil unidades até 1961. Série IIA (1961) ganha freios a disco dianteiros e se torna ícone militar. Em 1967, a Rover integra Leyland Motors, formando British Leyland (BL). O Land Rover ganha Royal Warrant de George VI em 1951, usado em expedições como a Trans-Antártica de Shackleton. Produção atinge 500 mil; foco em durabilidade para fazendas, exércitos e aventuras globais.
1971: Série III introduz painel de instrumentos modernizado e ventilação aprimorada. Mas 1970 marca o grande salto: Range Rover, criado por Spen King, com suspensão coil, interior de luxo e motor V8 3.5L 130 cv – o “4×4 de 2 assentos”. Vence rally Londres-Sidney em 1971. Em 1978, Land Rover vira empresa separada sob BL. Produção total: 1 milhão de unidades. O Range Rover transforma a marca de utilitário em ícone de estilo off-road.
Anos 80: BL enfrenta greves e qualidade baixa. 1983: Ninety e One Ten substituem Série III. 1989: Discovery, o “SUV familiar”, com motor V8 e design boxy, vende 70 mil no primeiro ano. Em 1987, Range Rover volta aos EUA via importador independente. 1989: rebranding para Land Rover como marca própria. Apesar da recessão, expedições como Camel Trophy solidificam reputação global. Produção: 2 milhões cumulativos.
1990: One Ten vira Defender, com coil springs e motor 200 TDI diesel. 1997: Freelander, primeiro monocoque, compacto e urbano. 1994: Discovery Série II. Em 1994, BMW compra Rover Group por £800 milhões, injetando tech como injeção eletrônica. 1998: Range Rover P38A com suspensão hidroneumática. Vendas explodem nos EUA; Land Rover vira sinônimo de luxo off-road, com 300 mil unidades/ano.
2000: Ford adquire Land Rover (e Jaguar) por US$ 2,5 bi, integrando ao Premier Automotive Group. 2002: Freelander Série II. 2005: Range Rover Sport, mais dinâmico. 2006: Discovery 3 com suspensão pneumática Terrain Response. 2007: Defender atualizado. Foco em alumínio e eletrônicos; vendas dobram para 250 mil/ano. Expansão para China e Índia impulsiona crescimento, com ênfase em sustentabilidade inicial.
2008: Tata compra Jaguar Land Rover por US$ 2,3 bi, salvando da crise Ford. 2009: Discovery 4. 2010: Range Rover Evoque, compacto fashion, vende 200 mil no primeiro ano. 2011: Range Rover 4ª gen com alumínio total, 420 kg mais leve. 2013: Defender concept DC100. 2015: Discovery Sport substitui Freelander. JLR atinge 1 milhão de vendas/ano globais, com forte presença em mercados emergentes.
2016: fim do Defender original após 68 anos (2 milhões produzidos). 2017: Discovery 5. 2018: Range Rover Velar. 2020: novo Defender, com tração elétrica e tech autônoma. 2021: Range Rover 5ª gen PHEV. 2022: Defender 130 de 8 lugares. 2023: Range Rover Sport L461. JLR investe £15 bi em EVs; vendas: 350 mil unidades. Foco em “Above and Beyond” com expedições como a Trans-Americana.
Em dezembro 2025, Land Rover celebra 77 anos como pilar do JLR (Tata), com 400 mil vendas anuais. Lineup: Defender (off-road rei), Discovery (familiar), Range Rover (luxo supremo) e Velar/Evoque (urbanos). 2025: Range Rover SV com V8 635 cv e PHEV 510 cv; Defender OCTA de 626 cv estreia. Transição EV: Range Rover Electric em 2026. Pebble Beach exibe expedições históricas. Após 77 anos de conquistas globais, Land Rover equilibra tradição robusta e futuro sustentável.
